Unless you are specialized in an area of medicine or disaster relief or community development/planning, etc....it is more costly to send you there than it would be for someone there to do the work on their own....so get a college degree in something you like to do...and in the meantime, do some volunteer work here to put on your resume. You could work for doctors without borders or simply teach english....but you will need financing and patience....as 'hospitals' and schools there are nothing like they are here. I dig wells in Ghana and repair houses in villiages nearby....but I started by working with habitat for humanity and other local projects....so that I knew my stuff when I got to Ghana. Still, they do things differently in the 3rd world.....i.e.....before we had machines to dig wells....in Ghana, it is hands and homemade shovels. For houses, we use just about any type of wood material we can find...which would never meet code here. Schools teaching english are sparse...but the curriculum varies and the children are quite rowdy. They will listen, but the schedules are strange and the kids sometimes sit for 3-4 straight hours, while at other times, the day is over by 12pm or they have 3-4 hour breaks. It's just an entirely different world....and you have to prepare yourself for that and not expect everything to go smoothly. Good luck!
