Travel guide or do it yourself?

For planning vacations, including overseas, do you get better travel deals by using a travel agent who finds deals for you...or by researching and putting it together on your own?

i'd prefer researching & putting it together my-self...

I would say a package tour. I just started traveling last year, and I used EF College Break. They were really good and they take care of all the details for you. All you pay for is lunch and dinner, since the package tour includes round trip airfare and hotels and a tour director.
