Depends on what kind of artist they are. A painter will need brushes, a photographer will need a camera, and a sketcher will need a selection of pencils of different grades.

Pencils come in 9 varieties:
HB is the standard pencil and it's in the middle of the scale.
4H is the hardest pencil and it leaves less carbon on the paper than HB.
4B is the softest pencil and it leaves more carbon on the paper than any other pencil.
The scale goes in this order from hard to soft:
4H, 3H, 2H, 1H, HB, 1B, 2B, 3B, 4B

I carry a sketchbook, pencils, charcoal and lots of pastels. Since i travel a lot and paint is usually frowned upon on planes, i use pastels.

If I'm traveling, the most I'll carry with me is a sketchbook, a mechanical pencil, and a drawing pen. Unfortunately, my works do not travel well and I really need my drawing table, light, files, supplies, brushes -- my studio space. I can, however, draw out sketches of what I'd like to illustrate once I get back home. Sketching does not truly scratch the itch of wanting to illustrate fully, but it helps me to stay in a creative frame of thinking.

As mentioned, it depends on the KIND of artwork to be done.

While virtually ALL of my paid work is in digital form, I HAVE to keep up my drawing chops by constant practice, sketching from real life. Since I RARELY sell any of my sketches as they are, I find that all I need, whether traveling, or just going out to a nearby park to sketch, is a pad of paper and ordinary number two office pencils. I don't even need to bring an eraser.

I used to carry one of those zippered plastic pouches with several pencils, a couple of erasers, a pencil sharpener and a handfull of Sharpie markers. I find that I pack that pouch less and less often.

What I DO bring is my camera. Sometimes my itinerary is so full that all I have time to do is snap a handfull of quick pics. I bring these images home and do sketches from them.
