Single men could travel lightly carrying ever thing they needed to survive.
Families intent on setting up a homestead needed to carry quite allot if they were traveling to a remote destination.A wagon or a line of pack animals would be used in that case. Tools: Shovel, axe, scythe, basic carpentry tools, knives Extra heads for tools like axes and hammers were carried.Handles could be made along the way. Food: Flour, salt pork, dried beans and fruits, some onions and potatoes. Weapons: Whatever they could afford. Rifles were terribly expensive Hardware: A few nails, some raw iron to fashion metal objects. Cooking utensils: not much more than a kettle a frying pan and a "Dutch Oven"(a covered cast iron pot that was surrounded by coals used to bake bread ect) were most of what was needed for meals |
