There are forums and you can browse user profiles as well. It's a great site for travelers.

I mostly start traveling alone, I meet people underway.
Sometimes I join a tour for part of the trip, other times I just go to a hostel and the others there are often also traveling alone.

So if you can not find a travel partner before you leave, just start traveling and be open to meeting people along the way.
