Some people are idiots.
Seriously, though, I'm in the left lane more often than the right just because I drive faster than quite a few other people on the road. Just makes more sense. Then if someone faster than me comes along, I just move over for them. In Oklahoma, they've changed it. The signs now just say "slower traffic keep right." |

Your right, it is for passing. But with today faster cars, people think it's their personnal race track. Plus, since trucks tend to cause distortions in the pavement, you can drive faster with more control on a smooth road. Police rarely enforce that rule/law for cars. But they will be quick to tag a semi.

People are idiots and don't realize it... when you pass them on the right they act like they weren't doing anything wrong. I really think you should be issued a citation for driving in the left lane if you are not in the process of passing someone... or during a traffic jam.

Because there are TOO many ignorant dumb drivers out there that don't realize the left lane is for passing. I live in Las Vegas and traffic is terrible, partly due to bad road ways, but mostly due to the DUMB drivers out there. Or hpw about those stupid semi truck drivers that ride the fast lane the whole time. IGNORANT!!

It depends on the number of lanes and the conditions.
On a 3-lane highway, I avoid the right lane at all costs. This prevents most problems with people getting on and off the highway causing me to have to speed up or slow down. It also cuts down the number of idiots cutting me off to get off at the exit they almost missed. On a 2-lane I try to stay in the right lane. Of course if you are traveling a little faster then everyone and you keep hopping to the left lane to pass, I think it's safer to stay in the left lane and move right if someone needs to pass me. |

Open highway I tend to travel in the left hand lane. Usually the smoother of the two lanes. When I see a vehicle overtaking me, I will move to the right hand lane to allow a pass on my left side. Then I move back to the left lane. Or not. Just depends.
Locally I use the left lane for passing only . I like the phrase I heard on the NPR program "Car Talk". One must be actively engaged in passing to be in the left hand lane. |

Too much traffic. When you're behind one guy who is going 71mph and passing someone in the right lane (going 70mph), you just wait inthe left lane until he finishes and you can accelerate again. That's how it usually turns into a travel lane. Also, when there are too many cars, you sometimes just can't help but use the left lane unless you want a line of cars tailgating each other in the right lane.
