i am trying to work out a route for travelling round the world without flying

a boat is the only other way or submarine.

There are many cruise lines that offer around the world cruises - this might be your best bet. Or you can just do a single cruise across the oceans and travel by car/train within the countries.

Interesting. Awhile back, I asked a similar question about going to Europe from the US without flying. Some people suggested going by cargo ship, but I discovered there are still transatlantic as well as transpacific cruises where you can travel in comfort and style. There's some that go from Los Angeles to Australia and back. I'll leave a link for one of the websites that might interest you.
