when something's traveling faster than the speed of sound, do we not hear it when it passes us?

if i have the ability to fly and i fly just in front (5yards)of a mach 2 plane, would i hear it or not?

We hear the "sonic boom" which is the shock wave in front of the speeding object. That generally drowns out any other noises around. You may hear sounds from the object after teh shock wave has past.

No, we hear a sonic boom. Which is the sound cutting through the air. It can be very damaging to our ears.

But it depends how the plane is travelling. Most of the time we'll hear the sonic boom AFTER the plane has passed us.
