Can someone explain to me why women aren't allowed to travel alone without mahrems?

i mean nowadays it's the same for both men and women regarding safety...so why can men travel around the world while women can't even go to another city without a man with her?
and what if she doesn't have any mahrems alive?
what if the college she wants to join is not availble in her city? she still can't go to another one and settle with whatever she gets???
kiba....a two hrs bus trip with my girlfriends and other 50 passengers...what's wrong?
the bus can be hijaked then it's the same danger for me as men..

and i can get robbed,raped and killed in the the back street in my city...what difference will it make?

well for one, maybe the women doesn't want to be on a missing persons report........ and whats a "mahrem", is that a womans man slave or something??

because muslim husbands are afraid that the wives will elope with Atheist, jewish, christian or buddhist men if allowed to travel by themselves

There is tons of danger in the world for women traveling alone or with a group of other women. She can get raped, sold into a sex ring which she'll never come out of alive, be abducted, be beaten, be mugged, be robbed, be killed, be molested on the streets. Just because there are now airplanes, trains, and buses doesn't make women able to travel alone. It is for her own protection. Women don't have upper body physical strength like a man. She would be unable to prevent a man from having his way with her no matter how much she fought him or screamed. It's virtually impossible. God knows the dangers that are out there for women who travel abroad and in their own citites/countries alone. Don't argue with what God has made lawful. Women wouldn't be able to fight off an attacker.

EDIT:Thx Mr. Anderson. People don't like me lol. To the questioner:A bus can be hijacked, just like a plane or a train. That is one reason why it isn't safe. Just because your school is 2 hours away doesn't mean something can't happen to you on the bus ride along the way. It's better to travel with a mahram or not go at all.

The Prophet said, "A woman should not travel* except with a Dhu-Mahram (her husband or a man with whom that woman cannot marry at all according to the Islamic jurisprudence), and no man may visit her except in the presence of a Dhu-Mahram**." A man got up and said, "O Allah's Apostle! I intend to go to such and such an army and my wife wants to perform Hajj." The Prophet said (to him), "Go along with her (to Hajj)."

And there is this one:Hadith - Sahih Muslim, Narrated Abu Hurayrah, R.A.
"Do not permit your women to travel, except that she has with her a mahram(Dhu mahram)."

Because a woman's sense of direction sucks, and she might get lost without a man to show her the way.

well if ur going with a bunch of girl nothing wrong with it but by ur self i don't know but i think cuz the parents are worried wat the guys will do not there own daughter cuz same goes with my sister she cant leave the house unless i go and its annoying

@Mr Anderson im not like i now that and im not with it that women should go alone but the can some time a girl might be softer then a guy but trust me there are girls that will beat up most of the guys and i always say wat ever is going to happen allah katiba

well 1stly i diagree with ur statement its not the same if a man and a woman were to get robbed.

lets suppose that the chances of it occuring are equal for both the man and the woman.

Who is more likely to rob you.......a man? right?

so in this case when a man tries to rob another man, he will rob him, the man who is being robbed will be able to defend himself, if he can't then thats all that will happen, he will get robbed and prly get a beating

but if a man is robbing a woman, then there is another risk as well (May Allah protect all women from this)

so its not the same

also if you have no mahrum, then you can easily get one.....by getting married

this is something which i recommend many times, this is something that will save you from a lot of hassle, but nobody seems to agree with me....

edit @ wisam katoue, that is the exception not the general rule, also a guy who is going to want to rob u is going to be pretty confident in his ability to actually rob u, otherwise he wnt even try it

LOL......no thats not wat i am suggesting, wat i am suggesting is that u should have a mahram....if not by blood then by marriage....and that he will take you wherever u want :D........some of the scholars say that a woman can go on a journey by her-self, the distance of which can be travelled by two days.....but then u also have to look at where u live, if it is non muslim country with a high crime rate etc, then its best not to go out alone for even a five minutes walk....in my area recently there was a spate of kidnapppings (alhamdulilah, the kidnaaper was a fool and 2 victims managed to escape) but who was the robber, it was a man, and who were the victims??? of course girls who can not defend themselves and who were WITHOUT mahrums!! even though the kidnapper attempted to kidnap them in broad daylight!!

so in conclusion my favourite saying............prevention is better than the cure :D

you cant travel more than 24hrs without a mahram, but lets be realistic why would you ever have to travel that long? you take the bus, coach, train or plane. it usually takes only a few hrs to get to your destination. Once you reach your destination rule doesn't apply anymore.

if you're Muslim why are you questioning Islam if you already believe it to be the truth. Allah swt doesn't have to justify anything.
