What are the lifestyles of Marine cooks? Is it boring or just as adventurous? I plan to become a linguist, but my score is not high enough enough by a few points, so I'm going to spend 2 years as a cook and send some money to my family, then retake the asvab, then dlab, then become linguist. I was sick the day I took the asvab but I didn't want to whine cause it took us 3 hours to drive to the testing center and I tried the best I could while being sick.

Yes you travel wherever the Marines go..I cant tell you what a cook does exactly in the middle east but I will tell you what happens on base..
Our cooks worked three days straight and then had four off..Then they worked four straight and had three off..Most cooks have no weekends..They work odd schedules.. When they work they are there from about 0430 to 1830..They arrive about an hour prior to opening and leave about a half hour after closing..Our hours to eat were 0600-0800 for morning and evening was 1600-1800..The cooks had to remain in the chow hall all this time... Sometimes the higher ranking cooks went to the post office or some other place during meals.. The hours are long and you rarely exercise..You have to do everything on your own as far as PT.. Its not a glamorous job but its fun and it is needed and every enlisted Marine will benefit from your work. And remember you will work holidays while the other Marines are off because we still eat on our days off. |
