Default Travelling through Venice - Florence - Rome?

I'll be going from Lisbon to Italy to spend 6 nights there with my wife. Initially, I was planning to fly to Rome and take a train to go to Florence and Venice then back to Rome to catch my flight back to US. However, I see that train is not very cheap and I'm thinking of doing:

1. Fly from Lisbon directly to Venice
2. Train from Venice to Florence
3. Train from Florence to Rome
4. Fly back from Rome

How long should I spend in Venice and Florence? I was thinking of spending 1 night in Venice, 1 night in Florence and 4 nights in Rome. Is this good enough? Can someone please advise me?

You have a good schedule plan. I would spend most of my time in Rome, just like you plan to. I love Venice and Florence, but one night will be enough.

You have only 1 week, this is a few days to visit this 3 cities.
But your plane is good.
Take a look at this site
This is Italian railway home page:

I feel the train isn't to expansive.

Hello,

My suggestion would be to spend 2 days in Venice, take the train to Florence, spend the day there and then take a late train to Rome and spend the rest of your time there. Venice is a wonderful city and you should give it at least two days. You might want to skip Florence on this trip and spend the rest of your time in Rome. Four days will give you a nice amount of time to see the major sites of Rome and to start seeing the churches and lesser sites. You could spend an entire day at the vatican if you chose. Rome is a large city with lots of things to see. Venice is a much smaller city but has a lot to see and just wandering the city is one thing you don't want to miss out on.

Consider taking a city out of your trip, you will find you enjoy the cities more if you don't feel rushed.

All three cities on your list are amazing and all have very unique and beautiful sights. Rome is large and does have alot to see, but it also has a well organized metro system that gets you around quicker, giving you the ability to see more in less time, youll be walking more in both Florence and Venice so you might consider and extra night in either one of those cities, and only taking 3 days in Rome...have fun

Spend more time in Venice and Rome. On the next trip you can spend a whole week in Tuscany.

Hi,

If you plan to visit Italy again later I would suggest you concentrate on one place only for your whole week.
Do some planning before you arrive and you would get a much better experience!

Trying to squeeze to much into to short time schedule will just get you exhausted when you return home :-)

Believe me, I've tried both versions myself!
