Inexpensive travel is pretty much history. The price of fossil fuels has hit the airlines, too.
For the best deals:
Purchase your tickets AT LEAST 3 weeks out.
Consider flying on days when business travelers do not fly (avoid Monday, Thursday and Friday). Be willing to have layovers and plane changes, not a non-stop
If you can be flexible about when you fly, try priceline.
Try sites that compare all sorts of travel providers, like Kayak.com, Sidestep.com, Qixo.com (I like the first two, because you can see how different changes to your itinerary can change your fare.)
If you book 3 weeks out, leaving and returning on Sunday, Delta has a $152 fare round trip.
