Default traveling with 10 mth old?

I will be traveling soon with my 10 mth old actually this will be the first time in like 18 years that I fly too, but anyway I wanted to know any suggestions as far as what to pack, how to pack it, if you have an umbrella stroller where do you put it. Pretty much a walk through of traveling with a child. I am planning to be gone for about a month and he is formula fed so how do I pack the formula will there be any problems? Also in the carry on bag can I have the bottled water or how am I supposed to do that? I know these are pretty weird questions but I don't want to do something wrong and then get stuck in security my son is super hyper and not easily entertained so that's the last place I want to get stuck in. Any advice will be appreciated.

I made numerous trips from India to Canada many years ago when both of my oldest were babies.

As far as the umbrella stroller goes, the airport staff will take that from you just before you board the plane and give it back when you get off at the other end.

Since you are traveling with a baby you will be able to get on first and off first if you want but i suggest staying and getting off last. That will give you lots of time to get your stuff together and get off without being crowded or rushed.

Take a look at how often your baby eats and pack enough for two extra feedings in case you get delayed or he/she gets hungry while traveling. Check with your airlines about formula and baby food. There are exceptions to the standard rules regarding liquids and such if it's for babies. Your airline can fix you right up and it's not a problem. If you are that worried, take powdered formula and powdered cereal with you and you can always get warm water.

Generally I've found the stews to be great with kids and babies. On long flights they will often take the baby from you if they can. Everyone loves babies. With shorter trips they will see to it that you are taken care of well. They will always gladly warm a bottle or baby food and will provide warm water for cereal if you need it.

I've never had to worry about the change in pressure with one of my kids but have a soother or bottle handy in case he needs to suck something to break the pressure in his ears. There should be no need to make a big deal of it all, the trip should be really simple. Just remember, a couple of extra meals and extra diapers and you will be fine.

Can't answer the formula question, as I always breasfed. You can always ask for water as soon as you get on the plane. Here are some of the things that helped make it a more pleasurable experience for us. First, you MUST bring a cup or bottle, he will need to drink to help keep his ears clear on take-off and landing. You won't be able to fill it until you are past security with the new rules. You can either bring some jars of baby juice, or juice boxes (and put them in your one quart ziplock with other liquids) or buy a bottle of water once you pass security. Second, buy him a new toy that is for the AIRPLANE ONLY. On our first trip (he was 11 months) we bought a phone that played music and lights, on the second (he was 16 months) we brought him a book with pictures of his relatives in it. Both were big hits. You want something that will hold his attention for a while, and bring it out when you really need him to quiet down, or settle into his seat, and put it away when he tires of it. Don't take it out during your vacation, it is ONLY for the plane (until, of course, you are back home). If there is something he must have to sleep with (a teddy bear, blanket or whatever, his "lovey"), then don't forget it, and put it in your carry on, because he may want it for comfort on the plane. Also, the diaper bag does not count as a carry on, nor does his car seat if you are bringing it. We found that security was pretty lax in Sacramento and Long Beach when it came to baby food. We took some of those plastic fruit bowls and some re-filled baby food jars with peas and snacks, and all of those made it through security. I'm pretty sure you can have a separate one-quart ziplock for the diaper bag, but you may want to check on this (call the airline, they will also let you know what is/is not considered a carry-on as far as all the baby stuff goes, some airlines won't count your Pack n Play as a separate bag). Both trips, we kept our son in his stroller until we got to the gate, and checked the stroller at the gate. The stroller can carry some bags, too. In order to keep our son happy in the stroller, we have to have food, so we brought several jars of the Gerber Puffs. In general, we've found that a snacking baby is a happy baby, so bring snacks for the plane, too. Once at our destination, we were getting a rental car, so we got one of those baggage carts right away to help carry all of our bags.

IF YOU HAVE A DELAY: My husband always has to bring his work computer, I don't know if you have to, but we filled his work bag with some Baby Einstein, Thomas, and Bob DVDs, just in case we were stuck in the airport for any long period of time. Also, try to carry on extra diapers in case you are stuck on the plane for any length of time. The last time, since our son was walking and we were taking him to Disneyland, we bought one of those harness/leash type things, which we all swear we will never do to our child, but they are SO GREAT in places like amusement parks and airports, if you need to let your child out of the stroller (which, let's face it, most of us do, at some point, I know few kids this age that will sit in the stroller for a half-hour waiting for luggage after sitting on a plane for hours), and if you do let him out, you can fill the stroller up with bags.

IF YOU ARE DESPERATE: Okay, I know this sounds cruel, but some kids just don't travel well. If you've ever given him Benadryl, and you know that it doesn't make him hyper (it does so in about 1 of 15 kids), you can give him a dose on the plane to help make him drowsy and sleep. If you haven't given it to him, you may want to try giving him a dose before you leave just to be sure it won't make him hyper. I ALWAYS bring a bottle of Benadryl on our trips, just in case we should have an allergic reaction. I don't know how this will do in security (I don't know if they make a small enough bottle to carry on), since the first time we traveled you could bring all the liquids you wanted, and since I didn't need it on the plane then, now I just check it. Fortunately the only time we really needed it, we were at home anyway.

All of this being said, you know your kid best! Mine is not the type to do well in the stroller or car seat for long periods of time, but I know other kids that love it. So, go with your gut. Also, if you are traveling alone, keep it light, try to travel with as little as possible, you can always buy stuff once you get there, like wipes, diapers, and food.

Ask if there is someone at security that can assist you if you are alone with your child. It is scary to have to put them through the scanner separately and get yourself through and worry about your stuff!

Okay first off they suggest bringing only as much formula as you'll need for the flight, however you should bring more considering how often flights get delayed or cancelled (trust me I just went through that last week at seatac!) On TSA's website it doesn't say that you can bring bottled water through security but like another poster mentioned you can purchase water bottles once you're past security. If you carry liquid formula or bring powdered and use nursery water to mix the formula you just have to make sure you declare it (have it easily accessible) so that they can examine it. According to the website they won't ask you to have the baby taste or drink it but they may test it for explosives. Gelled teethers are allowed in your carry ons. You get a carry on and also depending on the airline you can bring an additional diaper bag at no additional cost.
You are allowed to bring a stroller through security into the airport and also have an infant carrier/carseat and have them check it at the gate so that is available before you even get off the plane when you land. Just be sure to ask for a gatecheck when they begin loading. Usually when they announce boarding they'll have first class go first and then will ask for anyone with young children or who need assistance to load next. Don't be afraid to ask the stewardess to help but I ran into most of them wanting to take my 6 month old daughter instead of helping with the diaper bag! Make sure you have at least 2 changes of clothing in the diaper bag. You never know when a child will develop a case of motion sickness and you really don't want them to sit in it for the entire flight. Bring a favorite lovey and a new toy so they have a few options on the plane. Make sure that you either have a bottle or binkie for take off and landing since those are miserable.
When going through security you will have to take off your shoes and the shoes on the baby. They will allow you to carry baby through the xray machine since he isn't exactly reliable on his feet yet. If you don't want them touching him make sure you don't have anything that will even accidently set off the alarms.
Personally make sure your seats are towards the middle of the plane. When they cancelled my outward flight they put me in the very last row next to the engines. It was so noisy that through the entire flight I couldn't hear my 4 yr old talking to me! Also Dress him lightly but with a warm sweater or blankie for on the flight. The plane was down right chilly until after we had hit cruising altitude! They will have the stroller and diaper bag xrayed. To make life easier for you do your best to pack things very neatly. TSA's website has great advice on how to pack and what is allowed. If you have any other questions call the reservation desk for your airline and they'll likely know the answer for you.
