Good fantasy - can't remember the title. It involved traveling gypsies, a curse and a school of magic.?

The main character was a child at the beginning of the book, traveling in a gypsy caravan with his parents. He was taught magic by someone that eventually traveled with the troupe, and who recognized his talent. There was some curse, or evil group involved that killed his parents and the rest of the gypsy caravan... I think. He ended up at some prestigious magic school where all were stunned at his prowess and how much he had learned "informally". I just can't remember the name of the book, though I DO remember thinking at the time that I wanted to catch the next in the series! A failing memory is a terrible thing!

that KIND of sounds like the Pelinor books.

I don't know what it is, but it sounds interesting. I've definetly heard of it before.
