Default Training a dog to go in travel bag??

my adult dog won't go in a carrier bag (he's 22lbs, king charles/boston terrier), but is capable of fitting into one. He won't respond to me putting treats in the bag or his toys (will totally ignore the food in fact). I have left the bag out so he can explore/play with it but he's totally not interested and will often hide if I try to put it near him. I HAVE to travel with him so what do I do?
he is crate trained though and loves being in there
the new travel bag won't fit in the crate so I can retrain him to associate both places with "kennel up"

Have you tried putting in a dirty old shirt of yours that has your scent on it?

I once bought my male chihuahua a pricey dog bed. He refused to go anywhere near it. This frustrated me greatly, as I put out good money for him this bed, so he'd have somewhere nice to lay down, instead of on the cold hard floor, and he refused to use it. I'd shove him in, he'd crawl out, I'd shove him in, he'd crawl out. Finally, I quit being stupid, and the light bulb went off. I put in one of my nightshirts. Didn't take an hour, and he was in that bed and loving it! After that, if he wasn't in my lap, he was in his bed.

Perhaps your boy doesn't like the way the carrier smells, put your shirt in and see if makes a difference.

You have to make it in to a game. My dog has had to ride in a crate (which I call his box) since he was 8 weeks old. It's soft sided and has a lot of mesh for him to see out of.

Find a treat (or even a little bit of turkey) that he wont say no to and throw it in there. And ignore it. He will eventually want the food enough that he will go inside.

Maybe your dog is so scared of what will happen, he just wont go inside. So before your long trip, do some smaller trips around your town. Make the crate a good thing. When he goes in it (or when you push him in it) give him a treat and go somewhere cool, like a dog park, a regular park, a petstore, or a friend's house. Make sure he has fun when he gets out.

He will get used to the box and realize that it's not a punishment, it's a vehicle for fun and good treats!

Check out the crate training tutorial through the link below. Training your dog to go inside a travel bag may have similar techniques.
