I haven't traveled on the Zephyr, but many times on the Coast Starlight. Your best bet is to get literature from Amtrak itself. They have route planning guides that feature the attractions along the way. I have seen these in racks in all Amtrak stations, but I wonder if they would mail one to you if you called the 800 number and asked. Otherwise, go to the Emeryville station and see if they have a guide for the Zephyr route there. Good luck. I've always wanted to do this trip from SF to Chicago.

Check the Amtrak website to whether they are offering the type of ticket that allows you to make a couple of stops along the way. Use their map of stops to determine whether there are any of the areas that interest you. If that train goes near Yellowstone/Glacier parks, that would be an awesome stop. Some people think the Black Hills and Mt. Rushmore areas are nice.
