I usually go in 1st class because it's usually less crowded and more comfortable, but it doesn't really make a lot of difference most of the time. On the Eurostar trains, reservations are mandatory - everyone has an assigned seat. On other trains, seat reservations are optional. If you don't have one, there's a chance that you'll have to stand, but usually it isn't a problem.

Depends which train, but you need to select the STANDARD fare - then you can select 1st or 2nd class.

To be honest there is not so much difference between the 2. You should get the Eurostar, or the intercity to Naples as these are the 2 fastest options (inter city cheaper as not quite as quick as the eurostar is faster.)

In my experience there is not enough difference to justify the higher fare for a two hour journey.

This really depends on WHEN you are going. If you will be there in the summer months when millions are vacationing, the trains will be packed and hot. In that case, if you go 2nd class, you will likely have to stand up pressed against some pretty sweaty and smelly crowds of people, while 1st class will get you a nice reserved seat in an air conditioned car.

If you are going outside of the heavy travel season, then I don't think 1st class is really worth it for such a short ride.

1st class isn't that much better than 2nd... it is a matter of crowds to be honest.

The cost difference isn't that much, so it really is a matter of what your price sensitivity us.
