Yes, you can prebook your ticket and pick it up at the station in Italy, but it doesn't save you money. Unless you're traveling on a day you think will be very busy, you would do better to turn up and buy a ticket for the next train that leaves (rather than risk missing your train due to a delayed flight).

Trenitalia's website (in sources, below) shows that today there are fast trains around every half hour and these take 3.5 - 4 hours. So you will get there in time to find your hotel (I'd recommend prebooking your room though!). City centre hotels won't shut early, but tell the hotel in advance that you expect to arrive around 8pm, and they can confirm that'll be fine.

Oh, and Pisa airport has a train stop right there, so you won't need to travel to get your train (see their website below, in sources).

I'm heading to Italy and have researched quite a bit over the last month.

Some inexpensive hotels close their doors at 10 or midnight. If you google 'Hotels near Da Vince airport in rome?' you'll get several choices to look into.

Rick Steves web site has great info on train transportation:
www.ricksteves.com

Or www.trainitalia.com which will give you schedules as well. Depending on the type of train you select, you may not need to prebook. For many trains you do not need to prebook. You'll spend a few mts or non waiting to purchase depending on time of day. If you have no patience, then prebook.
Safe and fun travels!

The hotels do not close unless they specify this on the web. If you have booked a hotel then check the information. Most of them are open 24 hours and you can check in at any time. Just let them know (via email or a quick phone call) that you will get there late just in case they think you are a 'no show.'

I work for a travel company here in Rome and all my 30 hotels are open 24 hours. You will often find the hostels too are open late to check people in.

Have a great time!
