Hi, I am a Kiwi traveller comming to the US and am travelling by amtrack train?

I am travelling from Washington DC to Los Angeles via Portland in December and am wondering if there is much snow anywhere along that route at that time of year. Also is December, before Christmas, usually a busy time of the year?
