i loved taking the EuroRail around europe when i went. it takes you pretty much everywhere. Depending on how long you will be there, you can get passes for a certain amount of days. Definitely take the eurorail.

You go to Gare Du lion and you get your ticket then you walk 2 blocks to the platform and if you live like 8pm or something you will be in Rome next day noon it is a beautiful trip and you change trains in torino ! go under the alps !

Before you leave, go to a bookstore and buy the Thomas Cook railroad timetable... it is a red and white book and you will learn to live by it... and you really can't get around without it.

For timetables, look on b-rail.be It is the website of Belgian Railways, and they have an English section. Click on "international" and enter your desired itinerary. This site can find nearly any connection in Europe- also try raileurope.com. But I like b-rail better.

This is a link to the France railways site:
http://www.voyages-sncf.com/dynamic/_SvHomePage?_DLG=SvHomePage&_CMD=cmdHomepageUK&WB= HP&rfrr=4685ac17fd2e7656e4918c53b246a3f7

Here is a link to the Italian Railways website: http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

Both are in English.

If you enter Paris and Rome, select the day you want to travel and either an time early in the morning for a day train, or a time early evening for an overnight train, you get times.
Some tickets are sold on internet, in that case these sites can sell them to you, if not, you will have to go to a travel agency, or to a railway station.
Railway stations in Europe often sell tickets for all other European railways, but not always, but it is worth the try if you are already somewhere in Europe. Paris the main stations are your best bet.
The Italian site seemed to sell more of the tickets for this trip, but maybe that is because with several journeys you will have to change in Italy.
There are also through trains.
