A lot of people find it impossible to read while traveling. While your eyes see that you're sitting down and thus stationary, other sensors such as skin receptors, inner ear and muscles feel motion. You can get nauseous and have headaches. The inner ear fluids become agitated and it's believed to be a body defense mechanism against poisons, thus it causes vomiting.
Looking downwards when reading causes confusing motor signals because your're looking at a stationary object while your inner ear feels motion.
I'm not quite sure why you never used to get sick, other than to say that as we get older are bodies are changing all the time. We discover we like foods that we once hated and foods we once loved, we can't abide.
If you're on a long journey you can try some anti-motion sickness pills, that should help.
