I once took the Indian-Pacific train from Perth to Sydney, and that was 3 days. It would be about the same from Melbourne to Perth. I strongly suggest if you travel by train to make sure you book a sleeping berth. 3 days in coach nearly had me climbing the walls of the carriage. Pay the extra cash and keep your sanity - you need room to move around.

Hi,
As far as I know, there is no direct train from Melbourne to Perth. What I'd do is take the Overland train from Melbourne to Adelaide (10.5 hours) and find an accommodation in Adelaide. The next day you should take the Indian Pacific train to Perth which takes 41 hours. However, it costs FAR more than flying believe it or not. Just the Indian Pacific costs $395. With Jetstar or Tiger Airways you can get it for less than $200! Sometimes they some really good deals - Jetstar had a month ago $50 Melbourne to Perth! |

You have to travel from Melbourne to Adelaide (daylight service) then from Adelaide to Perth (2 days) A Red Kangaroo sleeper from Adelaide will set u back $1,005.00 (adult) or $609.00 (Concession) however it's a shared room. A Gold Kangaroo Sleeper will cost you $1,355 (adult) or $926 concession. Single room. All meals are included in Gold Kangaroo. Just go to the web site for more info.
