this type of training needs to start from puppyhood- work in the car with the dog before you drive it- give him treats and make sure that he is comfortable in the car, then start with very short rides around the block or so - with lots of practice, move to longer trips- soon your dog will be comfortable riding- but just to add- the safest and most secure way to let your dog ride in the car is in a crate that is secured by a seatbelt.- it you have room in the vehicle for it- it will keep him safe, and in place so as not to distract you or cause an accident from a panicy episode from the dog.

Take dog to car. Throw bone in back of car. Dog jump in. Take dog short journey. Gradually lengthen journey and shorten bone.

If dog pee in car. Follow this: Take dog too garden/walk before journey. Dog pee. Follow above instructions.

If dog continue to pee in car then next time it happen pull car over in safe location. Calmly get out of car and walk around to back of car. Offer calm soothing words to dog. Advise dog that disobedient and impudent behaviour will not be tolerated. Suggest to dog that further pee in car may be met with ejection of dog from car at high speed. Show dog device for squeezing genetials. Look into dog eyes. Move slowly closer, and closer. Shout at dog. Dog will tremble. Dog will think of meeting with truck at 70 mph. Dog will ponder owner's red face shouting with bad breath. Dog will wince at the eye-watering genetial squeezing device. Dog will decide better not pee in car anymore.

My shepherd rides in my car, in the back, in a crate!!
If your dog is not obedience trained, this is the time to do it, before you start demanding things from it.
Getting in and out of the car is also an OB exercise and that is how I treat it. No treats, no begging, no negotiating.
As far as the urinating, it could be that the dog simply has to go before you get on the road, or that it gets overly excited or scared being in the car.
Get a crate and put the dog in it, safer for everyone that way!!

Good Job Greekman!! Problem pets DEFINITELY need to be crated on car rides! I totally agree.
