Accidents per year the car is the most dangerous yet probably the most economical since it is much faster that the train or bus system. Time is money after all. The Plane is the safest yet and fastest but it will usually cost more than the other options. And the train is in the middle if it goes to the destination you want.

It all depends on exactly where you are traveling. For the most part, I'd say driving is cheaper, and more convenient, than flying. But sometimes flying is cheaper than driving. Train travel is economical, but we don't have a great train system (slow, doesn't go everywhere you'd like it to, etc.). Bus (Greyhound) is another way to go. Again, it all depends on the destination.

depending on whether or not you are in a hurry, rail is safer. (and for freight more economical.. not sure for Passenger service)
http://www.bnsf.com/communities/faqs.html#6 the only drawback for rail assuming everyone had unlimited time and was in no hurry is that rail does not make pick-ups or stops at all destinations. |

Assuming you are talking ONE person.... Bus.
A car is the cheapest if you are going small town to small town. IE: Elko, Nevada to Bend, Oregon. Trying to make that trip on a plane or train would cost you a fortune and you would have to do it by a very round about route. A plane is cheapest if you are going from hub city to hub city. IE: Atlanta to Minneapolis. Since that is a main route for a number of airlines, you can get a quick direct flight at a very low rate. If you it by train, it would take a very round about route and lots of time. However, the whole thing changes if there are more people and/or you want to bring a lot of stuff with you. If you are talking a car full of people, driving is the cheapest as it takes about the same amount of gas to move that car full of people as to move one. In a plane or train, they would charge you for each person. |
