Cheapest way to travel by train in UK?

I am living outside of the city im studying in, so I travel by train 4 times a week, sometimes it might be 3, others 5. I found the railcard deal which gives a 1/3 off, but it's still incredibly expensive - are there any other alternatives?

if you travel same time and days you will prob find it cheaper by booking as early as poss, also book a number of journeys at once. but tickets are stupidly expensive.

Cheap and British train travel do not go in the same sentence.
