The train, if you book your tickets in advance you might well get them cheaper. But if you need to buzz around when you get there or have lots of luggage perhaps the car might be better.
Where are you travelling from and to, and what will you be doing when you get there. You also have to consider parking which can be expensive when you are travelling into some cities x |

car - petrol for a decent car (ie, anything but a gas guzzler) doing 180 miles would work out less than £25.
but, it all depends where you're driving too. a car is convenient and comfortable ( something you cant always say about the train) it is as clean as you want it to be and you dont have to ride with any obnoxious, smelly passengers... if you dont want to. but, parking can be awkward and expensive.... and if you're going to London there is the evil congestion charge to take into account. (edit) tyre wear and oil are a minimal expense over 180 miles. Insurance is something you have to have for your car, even if you only use it to drive 1/2 mile to church each week. Ditto road tax.............. and, if you're going to have a car anyway, you may as well use it. depending on where you're going, parking may be expensive....... or it may be free on a decent, average size car, with all running costs, you *could be* paying less than your £25 train fare |

In absolute terms a second hand car doing about average mileage costs about 15p a mile to run. A newish car about 40p
Depends on the car, a little AX would be less an XJR more, LOTS more... So thats a round trip of 180 miles - not a lot in it in the old car. If there are two of you going then of course the numbers change again. R |

It'll probably be cheaper to drive, if you're driving a small/medium car.
Whether it's better or more convenient depends on where you're going to, and whether you actually enjoy driving or prefer to let someone else take the strain. Personally I find driving very stressful and would much rather take the train if possible. |
