I have been booked on a train journey from Newcastle to London over the next few days. I asked the travel agent to allow me to get any train but they have purchased a off peak return ticket and have a seat reservation for 7.40am. I do not want to travel this early, more like 10am but I am not sure if this means I HAVE to take the 7.40am train or can I just get any? Any ideas?
Hi, thanks for your answers! I payed (or my company paid) 167.10 quid, It deffinatly says "OFF-PEAK R" There are 3 tickets, one STD OFF-PEAK R OUT and the other STD OFF-PEAK R RTN. The third ticket says STD Seat etc - VALID ONLY WITH TRAVEL TICKET. So from my understanding I dont have to get up tomorrow really early to get the 7:40 train I can stay in bed and get a later one :) Doesnt look like a special priced ticket to get a specific train there and back! |

If you have an advance purchase ticket (ie one with a special price deal), then you must use the train you are booked on. If you do not, then you will be surcharged. I suggest you return to your travel agent and ask them to clarify. How much, incidentally, did you pay for the ticket?

Yes no problem leaving Newcastle later it only really affects journeys that arrive into London before 1015, so if you want to leave about 10am then no problems.
the only time you have to get a specific train is if your ticket is Advance Purchase and it will say this on the ticket if it says off peak return then you can get a later train |

Even the PEAK TIMES have to return to the starting point but no one wants to go that way, so if you ride into the city on PEAK you can sit on the same car and return off PEAK.Later that day into the city is off Peak but th return is PEAK.because all of the commuters want togo home.

No, you don't HAVE to get the 7.40am train, you can get any one as long as it leaves at 07.40 or later the same day.
However, if you wanted to travel at 10am or later, and didn't mind returning to Newcastle outside of weekday peak times (including the afternoon/evening peak), then you could have got the much cheaper Super Off Peak ticket. (Not a problem if your company's paying, of course!) The Off Peak is more for people who want to arrive in London before 11.30am, and/or return from London during the afternoon/evening peak period. As such, it's priced mid way between the Super Off Peak ticket, and the much more expensive Anytime ticket, which is valid on all peak time trains as well as off peak trains. |
