Asked this question earlier but have discovered my big mistake was even though I am in the UK it went on to Yahoo USA instead of Yahoo UK. So putting it back on here after clicking on union jack to make sure Im on right website now. I have been told that the New Labour government's freedom laws whereby people in uk over 65 now get completely free bus travel anywhere in England, is going to be extended to apply to trains as well.Is this true? And is it right for this to be brought in as it could mean younger people in work who have to struggle to meet travel costs to get to workplace from home having to pay more so that older people who do not need to travel go free. According to the one answer I did get on Yahoo USA, Conservatives if elected would not bring in this only Labour will if re-elected. Is that true?

Haven't heard of it and cannot see it would ever happen. Rail fares are massively expensive and somone would have to pay for us. Who would that be.? The bus companies are endlessly complaining about subsidising Pensioners. I'm sure it would have been in all the papers if it were true. If you really have to know you could phone Age Concern.

Think this is sumthing being held back and proposed by Labour before next election to try to get grey vote. Think a lot of OAPs may be persuaded vote labour id they do propose that. But it would be totally unfair for ppl like me (aged 18) to have to pay extra so that ppl over 65 travel free as Im only on minimum wage. I need to use buses and trains to get to work while lazy git in flat next to mine is on pension but gets more per week than me in handouts for doing b-all and he rides on buses free. I hope with younger folk like Milliband taking over Labour they will be a bit less pro aged and pro laziness and a bit more pro we teenagers who work hard for our paltry wages?

Why not have free bus passes for the pensioners, they have worked hard all their lives and didnt have the cushy time modern youth have. In those days everyone worked for what they got and payed plenty of taxes and health contributions. Nowadays a lot of people especially the young like to doss and just live of the taxpayer. Dont bleat on about Pensioners, we have done our bit for the country, now do your bit

Timbo you may be right when you say that this is a policy Labour are going to disclose before the next election to get the grey vote, but you are totally wrong about it being unfair for younger guys like you for the over 65s to have free travel on the buses. You are damned lucky to have a job so stop whingeing! But you have only been working for a few months, whereas people who retire at 65 have in most cases been working, and so paying income tax all their life and the tax they have been paying has gone, amongst other things, to pay for your schooling and your unemployment benefit and other such costs you have caused by existing. I believe Labour are right to bring in free travel on buses for the over 65 and you should have to pay for your bus travel yourself until you get to 65..
Regarding trains, no. At present in UK anyone over 65 can pay £24 to get a "Seniors Rail Card". Then they can get a third off any train fare within the UK,.It only takes them about one journey to get back the £24. I believe that would be a fairer way of doing it than giving old people like me totally free travel but perhaps instead of getting a third off it should be two thirds off. That would be fairer for all including poor overworked Timbo on his minimum wage.. |
