Age for child travelling alone by train?

The distance would be 82 miles and would take approximately 1.5 hours. It would be a straight through journey with no change of trains part way through. Somebody would be waiting to meet him at the other end and he'd have his own mobile phone. It would be during the day. He's sensible and would be aged 11.5. He would have this journey to do every 6.7 weeks.

Do you think 11.5 would be old enough to complete this journey by himself?
I would do it the first time with him to show him what to do and so that he could see the layout of the stations.
I live in the UK, not the Wild West :-/

It's too young. I'd worry myself sick if it were my child.

I think the age is 10 on a train. go with him first.

If an adult buys the ticket, most train companys aren't bothered about the age of the person.
They say the age is 15 but ive travelled alone at 11 various times.

Hmm - I'm really not sure. I know on an Aeroplane that would be fine, however this would involve a hostess looking after him. If someone would be meeting him at each end, and the train would not be stopping at all on the journey - I don't see why this would be a problem. But you should try to google this for a legal answer. Only you and he can decide. We don't know anything about him, whether he is independent, sensible, streetwise etc... I wouldn't let a child of that age travel that journey but it depends whether you think it is appropriate or not.

Yeah I think so. My brother flew to California by himself when he was 5 and there was one layover, Of course the airlines have people who helped him get to his next flight and everything, but I think 11 is old enough.

i think that is fine i know its scary but if you think about most children go by themselves to secondary school at 11 and most of them take the train.It'll be hard for you at first but it'll be okay

I think you have to think about what he is like as a person eg. mature, would he be able to cope if something went wrong.

Perhaps in about a 6 months time might be a better age for this journey.
