I think you count as an adult once you are 16.

I have not yet heard of a service that runs trains which bans children.

No, I doubt that. But you should be able to get a student travel card in most places.

I dont really know if this is the answer that you want but:

My bro who's 13 - 14 this year has been travelling on the train for loads of months on his own, sometimes with a couple of mates.

I don't think so but u can get a student travel card / 16-25s travel card - but u might get away with travelling as a child anyway depending on how young u look (I do sometimes and I am 21), just don't mention how old u are and see what ticket u get given

Yes. My family friend takes the subway from New Jersey to a high school in NY. He is only 14. Trains are basically the same. There are no restrictions. Did you ever see those little kids in movies where they go by themselves? Some are, "Dead Like Me," and "Unaccompanied Minors"
