A Sunday in September 1960, Waterloo (UK) to Lyme Regis, day excursion. Return fare was £1.05. Route was over the famous Atlantic Coast Express Line. Lyme Regis branch now torn up by Beeching. Much of the route now single track west of Basingstoke using diesel traction.
In 2002 I walked the Plymouth branch near Okehampton to the west of Yes Tor for about a mile and was amazed at the gradient of the old line, frequently used during my naval service at Plymouth, this line has also been torn up. |

Last year 2008: We on the Eastern edge of Stoke on Trent have real steam trains that we can travel on for about 5 miles. The station Fox Field, has a bar and cafe which serves dinners etc during the summer. It is located between Blythe Bridge and Caverswall Staffordshire. The local Church of St. Peters is worth a visit too with a statue of Martha Parker the wife of Admiral Lord John Jervis of Cape ST. Vincent. His statue is in Westminster Abbey. Further on toward Leek, in Cheddleton we have another railway set in a Beautiful valley. Pete Waterman has an interest here. There is also a Castle called Caverswall Castle and the new owner Ian MaClaren has turned it into a very nice Hotel. Cromwell attacked it, but that was not because he didn't like the Hotel! We are 5 miles from Alton Towers.
