We are going to Italy for 12 days and plan spending 7 staying in Florence, but taking a few day trips around Tuscany. Would it make more economic sense to buy a Eurail pass or just individual tickets?

Don't buy eurail for only one country. It's cheaper to just buy individual tickets. Eurail is mainly for traveling to more than one country. And when traveling around Tuscany no one even asks u for a train ticket. I was in Italy last year and I traveled by train at least 3 times a day for about 5 days. And I was never asked to show my ticket. It's only when your going to Rome or Florence that they ask you for a ticket. To all other places you just get on and get off. And make sure to bring a Italian dictionary because nothing is in English at the train stations. And make sure to look outside at every stop for the sign of the towns name because they don't announce it on the train.

Try "Raileurope.com" or "trenitalia.com" and price city to city tickets, I just bought first class tickets with stops in Milan, Venice, Florence and Rome for $390.00 vs EuropassItaly for $425 with 3 stops. Make sure you get reservations as well for the seats!! I would recommend city to city tickets or individual vs. eurailpass.
