About an hour and a half I'm told by my husband who made this trip several times while in the service.

It should not take more than two hours. I took the train to Barcelona - Madrid and viceversa and it took me an hour and a half and an hour and 45 minutes.

Check the RENFE for train services. There's no speed train between Barcelona to Madrid. Right now the Ave train from Madrid ended in Lerida in a 2 1/2 hour trip where you can get another train of approx. one hour to Barcelona.
I will not recommended to make that trip unless you spend at least 2 nights in Madrid.
I don't know where Kalikina get the information but definitely you can't do this trip in less than 3 1/2 hours.

The train ride is 8 hours (almost the same as by bus). You could take the midnight train (22:20) and arrive in Madrid at 7:21am. €38
On the way back, there's also de 22:04 train that gets to Barcelona at 7:38am. €38
I don't have info on the AVE.

The bus ride is 8:30 hours. A two-way ticket is €45.

It takes 50 minutes by plane, and you could find tickets as cheap as €20 (each way), depending on the date.
