A passenger train can travel 325 mi in the same time a
freight train takes to travel 200 mi. If the speed of the passenger train is 25 mi/h faster than the speed of the freight train, find the speed of each. |

The ratio of the speed of the passenger train and the freight train is 325:200=13:8
Let the speed of the passenger train be x miles per hour. Then the speed of the freight train would be x-25 mph hence,x/(x-25)=13/8 =>13x-325=8x [by cross multiplication] =>13x-8x=325 =>5x=325 =>x=65 Therefore the speed of the passenger train is 65 mph and that of the freight train is (65-25 or) 40 mph |
