At the moment, we are far from being space-worthy. It takes us forever to reach any destination, and costs a lot. Do you believe that we will ever reach the point to have a plausible means of space travel, or do you believe that we as a human race will destroy ourselves or for some other reason, will be unable to reach that point in time?

i think we could be self-sufficient in space in the future. With nuclear reactor ships, solar panels, and perhaps fusion engine. I think we can sustain life with such technology.
However, i seriously doubt we will reach anywhere because the distances between us and other solar system are enormous. Planets in our solar system and their moons are uninhabitable. Would we destroy ourselves? - that's a possibility, but unless we have supernatural disasters: meteorite impact, sun expansion, i don't think we can wipe ourselves out completly. |

Yes, I believe that we will find a way to travel through space. Not in our lifetime, but someday. The only real question, to me, is will we go extinct before that time comes?
There are many ways we have thought of to travel through space, the most common is of course near-light speed traveling. This is a nice thought, but even at that speed, it'd take so long to travel to another galaxy that it wouldn't be efficient. Everyone that you know would be dead when you reached the location, as well, the world would have changed. Another way to travel through space may be by using a "worm hole." The theory behind this, suggests that you could bend space, folding it over on itself. Then you just have to step through the hole, into the other side. This would be a very quick way to move long distances. Here's a thought for you... If you were to set out on a 1,000 light year trip, traveling at 99.99999% the speed of light, even if you arrived at the destination in 1,000 Earth years, it would be the year 3008. What if in that time, we discovered worm hole traveling? Somebody could actually beat you to your destination. Wouldn't that be something? Wonder what somebody would think about that. |

I don't believe there's any way of making valid predictions about what's possible from the physics perspective.
Given the fact most scientists prior to the Wright brothers event believed manned heavier-than-air flight was impossible, current scientific beliefs about the physical limitations are rendered doubtful. However, the human population is expanding so rapidly and resources are being consumed at such a rate I suspect it might transpire that, should a method be found the resources to fulfill it might no longer be available. If it does happen it will almost certainly the the product of engineers thinking outside the absolutes and boxes scientists have drawn around what's possible [heavier-than-air manned flight] and simply done it. |

Certainly more efficient. There is some work being done on better ion engines. But that would only be useful in the solar system. No matter how much we might need to colonize other worlds to insure our racial survival, the universe doesn't care. Interstellar distances are just too vast. And if you manage to build up some speed, collisions with interstellar gas and dust will destroy you. No, our fate is linked with Earth and the Earth alone. We either learn how to survive here, keeping our numbers in balance, or our population will collapse in a nightmare of anarchy. There is no escape to the stars. That is fantasy.
