Default How To Justify Space Travel?

Title says it all.

How would YOU justify space travel?
Guy's don't take it personally.

I'm only 14, I'm asking this for a speech I have to write.

I'm all for the space program. Lol

Maybe we'll find our next fuel source to make us not dependent on fossil fuels.

why is there a need to justify it? was there a need reason to justify exploring the new world? as long as were not killing or harming any new species in the process there is no reason to justify space travel.

so i wouldnt justify space travel, mostly because your the first person to ever think we need to.

The universe is massive. It is difficult to think that we live on the ONLY planet that occupies life. Through the expanses of space I would have to think that there is something else out there. Whether you are a creationist or a evolutionist, you have to believe that there is too much room for just us to reside in. In the words of Star Trek, to justify space travel is: "To seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no man has gone before."

well depends on how you mean justify, meaning going to space itself, it's called discovery...possible colonization of another planet, move mankind away from earth and be able to live on other planets having more and different resources. it is in human nature to discover and explore all unexplored areas, without it, mankind would have never stepped out of were we first were (according to science, africa) we would have just stayed. time on earth is limited, we are using all the resources, and is due for a major catasophic event to happen. not saying it will happen, but is due for one. history repeats itself...so justifing it is simple would be discovery and eventual survival.

First, I would establish a purpose for going somewhere.
Second, I would acquire the funding.
Third, I would go.
It's still a free country.

I justify space exploration, not manned space travel.

For much less than the cost of a Shuttle flight (which goes nowhere except Earth orbit, around and around) we can explore several planets for years (Mars rovers, Cassini, Voyager, Pioneer...)

And good telescopes are a great return on investment.

Think of it this way: Would you rather get the weather report for Tierra del Fuego by satellite download, or by mounting a 2-year expedition with all your food, air, clothing, medicine, etc. and risking your life?
