Default With rising taxes and government overspending...do you think space travel will be likely ...?

before global warming and other looming disasters on the horizon make life to complicated for such ideals?

We have space missions planned, and I, for one, am looking forward to them. No manned missions to Mars, though; that's silly.

Yes, and how fast depends on how fast a new innovation in structure frame reinforcing is implemented. The biggest problem with space travel, disaster prevention, and fighting global warming is that our current building and structure frames are dinosaurs! This is the only industrial product on the planet that hasn't seen improvements and upgrades! Low-tech building frames were wiped out during hurricane Katrina, and continually fail in all types of disaster-level events. Isaac Newton showed us that momentum equilibrium is possible, and when the structure frame designers of the world realize this and start developing frames with tension-resistant continuous reinforcing (the string part of Newton's carts in unison movement proof-theorem) for the structure frames, they will be able to disign and assemble hurricane-proof buildings, collision-proof automobiles, and spaceship bodies that can handle the speeds and speed-accellerations required to to travel long distances in relatively short time periods! The engines for these speeds are currently being developed around the world, and these engines are years ahead of current structure frame designs and assemblages. Another area of exploration, ocean development, can also benefit from this new hi-tech frame development, like for in-water travel tunnels, light-frame and structure water-proof buildings, and so on. This hi-tech structure frame has been developed in 2005-2006, and has several methods of provings performed, that shows the improvements to current structure frames, and new possibilities for all kinds of applications, like the ones mentioned in this answer.
