In answering a R&S question, I realised my ignorance on the view Muslims take on evolution, birth control (contraception) and the possible future of human life off of planet Earth.
I would appreciate quotes from the Qu'ran, but it's not necessary. Also, non-Muslims may answer from their experience with Islam. Thank you. So far, everybody has great answers! What I noticed right away is that there seems to be many views of each issue, and varied interpretations, just like the Bible. Thank you everyone - it's going to be hard to choose. |

I've heard that many Muslims in the Middle East refer to evolution as an evil ploy dispatched by Western Christians. I get a kick out of that one. It turns out that there is a religious group that understands evolution less than Christians do.
Birth control is likely frowned upon in Islam, but I have not researched that. I will get back to you with a link... As far as space travel goes, it seems unlikely that a strong opinion on the matter is available as the idea had probably not occurred to the writers of the Qu'ran. FD- those are some of the most obscure references I've seen. If that passes for evidence to you, you've got some pretty low standards. |

"Do not the Unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together before We split them asunder ? We made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?"
Surah Al Anbiyaa verse- 30 God has created everything under His will and command. This verse is referring to evolution, but it also has a scientific miracle in it: "the heavens and the earth were joined together before We split them asunder" Im not good in science but the atmosphere around the Earth had formed later on from when the earth was actually created. Do you think our Prophet Muhammad (saw) would have known this 1400 years ago? Of course the Quran was revealed by Allah. Check out more scientific miracles in the Quran. You may be amazed to see some things. (sorry i didnt answer the entire question) |

well according to islam the theory of evolution is wrong. because in the Quran is says that Allah(god for arabic) has made the world, the heavens and hell. He is the creator of everything and he is omnipresent.
Contraception...uh...birth control? i think it suggest withdrawal which was as advanced it can get 1400 years ago lol. and space travel....im not sure but i do know that Quran speaks about how Allah has made the EArth as a planet and the Sun is a start and that the earth revolves around the sun... |

i'm a muslim. i considered that men were not from evolution.
birth control (for married people) is okay because the parents must responsible to the child, if not capable then use birth control. As for people who are not married its so wrong in anyways. Going to other planets is very interesting haha! i want to go actually, to mars! pluto! everywhere possible! but i'm not sure about aliens. Haven't heard the facts about them in Quran actually |

For a full explanation of Evolution and Islam, please go to
www.harunyahya.com This is a very good website for that. Muslims are allowed to do birth control, knowing that if God desires them to have children, they will. Islam does not say anything about humans getting off this planet. There is no opinion about it as far as I know. |

The Quran is very complex peice of Literature. Its descriptions of scientific processes range from clear to metaphorical. In order to interpret it,we use whatever knowledge we have on hand,so as scientific knowldge progesses as does our understanding of the Quran and what Allah is saying in it.
Evolution is relatively new scientific theory.I call it a theory but its pretty much accepted fact at this point. Since Allah does not explicitly say the exact process by which he created man we are left to interpolate from what is said.In the past we assumed a creation idea that said that after the big bang the universe was created in six periods or very long periods of time but was similiar to christian model. Now we have more evidence from science to help us understand the quran.I can say that yes,the concept of macro evolution and mans "changes in forms" are compatible with Islam.Unfortunately many Muslims are not aware of this. Birth control is something that should be decided by both husband and wife,so its unlawful for a woman to take birth control pills etc without her husbands knowledge or consent. In some circumstances it is encouraged,e,g for up to two years after the birth of a child,if it will damage the mother etc.Abortion is frowned upon but allowed for up to four months into pregnancy. After four months it is allowed only if the child is damaged or if it damages the life of the mother. The Quran says that Allah is the Lord of Worlds. It also says that we cannot imagine how insignificant we are in the scope of the universe. We do not know what is out there, perhaps humanity will leave earth, perhaps not. However it says that we cannot cross through dimensions or the bounds of heavan and earth without the help of God. 055.033 YUSUFALI: O ye assembly of Jinns and men! If it be ye can pass beyond the zones of the heavens and the earth, pass ye! not without authority shall ye be able to pass! Hope this was helpful |
