My little brother has a question(he's 9) When you travel to the moon or another planet does it really take 20 years?
I can't answer this too good for him. I said I think that it is 20 years but not like he thinks. That there some sort of scientific answer to this. That if you travel to the moon or space that you really don't come back 20 years later. Can anyone help. |

It took only about 2-3 days (one way) for the Apollo missions to get to the moon.
The journey to Mars is longer, depending on where it is at the moment. But It's measured in months, not years. The entire mission may be last for something like 18 months, but that's only because the astronauts may have to wait for Mars to make an orbit and come back close to Earth to get home. Otherwise, they have a huge distance to travel to get here. The actual travel time is much less. |

No, it doesn't take nearly that long. Apollo 11 was the spacecraft that carried Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. It took off on July 16th 1969, and they were back home on July 21st 1969. So they got there, landed, walked around, and came home in 5 days. Not 20..or 40 years. As for other places it depends on how far away it is.

it does not take any where near close to 20 years to travel to the moon. that can be done in less than a week... usually only a couple of days for a round trip. a planet is a different story. it would take about 20 years to get to pluto. mars would take about 3, jupiter 7, saturn 11, uranus 15, neptune 18.
i'm not sure about the last paragraph... if you are talking about a year on the moon, its about 27 days because thats how long it takes for the moon to orbit the sun. so if you were on the moon for 2 months earth time, you would've left earth two months ago, but reletive to the moon, you would've been on the moon for a little more than two years. make sense? it has nothing to do with time itself being warped. for example, if you were on mars, the day would be 26 hours instead of 24 because mars rotates faster. |

Actually, it depends on the distance of the planet you wanna go to. Going to our moon will take 3 days and returning will take 3days more. It is a total 6 days journey.
Going to Mars 'll take 3-4 months and other planets of our solar system, some years. But If you're talking of only our solar system, then it may take 20 years to reach the edges. And to think 2 travel out of our system, then it'll take more than 20 years:) |
