All that what car said. But I wouldn't call it safe. People in Argentina are pretty poor and will do whatever it takes. I lived there for a while, and kidnapping happened pretty much on a daily basis.
If you stay in the touristy areas and make sure others are around you though, you'll be fine. It's really a fun city. |

I was just there two weeks ago. Felt perfectly safe, but watched myself as in any city in the world. Easy to get around, inexpensive right now because of the exchange rate and a lot of cool stuff to see. I enjoyed the museum of fine arts, their collection of argentinean artist's upstairs is better than their european masters down stairs, I really like Xul Solar who has his own museum too. I enjoyed the city tour I took, you should take one too to get oriented, La Boca is cool to visit as is San Telmo on Sundays for the Plaza Dorrego market. The national cathedral by the Casa Rosada is pretty impressive (even the Italians would be impressed), the Recoleta cemetary is a must see (I enjoyed the designer mall next door too, Buenos Aires Design. Went to Colonia for a day trip that was nice, didn't make it Montevideo, but I hear it's cool too. There are also trips to places like Igaucu falls that I would love to go back and do.
