I want to travel in South America, but also want to work while I do it. Is this a viable option or is the SA "travelling experience" best completed by purely backpacking?
I've tried so hard to find out about this from other sources, but it's a bit tricky. You are my last chance guys.....please help me! |

I think the answer depends on the length of time you will be there. For example, if you get in a volunteer program, they often will exchange room and board for your work. The only thing is that a lot of volunteer-type jobs require you to stay in that job for a certain amount of time, anywhere from a few days to 6 months or more. I think this would give you an opportunity to explore on your downtime and save a little money at the same time.

http://www.samexplo.org/ Most of the work for gringos is volunteer work. Maybe only paying room and board. This site has opportunities to work and volunteer. Another viable way is to teach english and get paid. But look for at least 6 month commitments. http://www.eslcafe.com/
There are many volunteer opportunities.(DO NOT PAY TO VOLUNTEER) |

Working in a country is the only way to integrate and experience it as it really is. If you backpack only you do miss something. Try teaching english. Do voluntary work first to gain experience. You could be teaching in Brazil's favellas next year and that is something you can't properly experience unless you've got the locals respect (and protection).
