You will need a valid passport and as you are South African you will also need a Visa which you will have to get from the American embassy.

You need to apply for a B2 visa from the US Embassy in London. They will want to see proof of your ties to the UK, that you have a home and a job to come back to. You shouldn't buy your ticket until after you get your visa as tickets will not be refunded if visas are refused.
