Does anybody know the least expensive way to travel between Brazil and Europe?

Or between Brazil and South Africa? I tried looking into standby flights, but it doesn't seem that they do that anymore (unless you work for the airline). I've also looked at freighter travel, but that ends up being more expensive than a flight. Does anybody have any other information or suggestions?
