'Cause it's a loss of money. Works like this:
a) if you just give away so many potatoes, the prise of potatoes will go down since it's cheaper to get them for free if you wait for what doesn't get to the supermarkets b) if you give them away (dump them at low prices) to the people in the countries where they are starving, the local potato-sellers lose their businesses and their countries are worse off don't ask me, it's completely complicated |

Shining Star has already given this reason, but I thought I might try to clarify. Basically if you dump a load of free food on a country then the people won't work because it is easier just to accept the food. This loss of work will ruin the countries economy, increasing its dependence on foreign aid. This is not to say their aren't situations where you should give away food, it is just that it is better to use a good education program rather than just dumping your surplus in poor countries as a way of helping them.

Who are you really helping by feeding the whole world? What if everyone in the whole world gets potatoes? When people have food and a home, they reproduce. so now, the world population has now doubled, and you now have double the mouths to feed. If you're truely interested in the food race and the fate of the world, read Ishmael by Danniel Quinn. He has some great points in his book, you'd like it.
