Vasco Nuñez de Balboa looked at the Pacific Ocean as an European for the first time in the early 16th Century, after crossing the Panama strait. He dubbed the ocean as the "South Sea" until Magellan proved it was as big as the Atlantic Ocean.
Magellan was also the one who called the Pacific Sea as "Pacific", since after crossing the treacherous currents in the South Atlantic and finding the "Strait of Magellan", he found a much peaceful ocean. |
