Default On the 15 hour flight between Los Angeles and Hong kong, How much time will you fly over the Pacific Ocean?

Assume a no or low wind condition, and the shortest distance.

You will fly over the Pacific Ocean for almost the whole flight because Los Angeles is on the coast and so is Hong Kong.

About 13-14 hours, but it depends on the airline because they all have different routes. Go to Flightaware.com to find their routes.

About 12 of those 14 flying hours. From L.A they actually go north along the western coast for several hours- the earth is round and that is the shortest direction for a while.

I'm looking at a Cathay Pacific flight map now, from LA you head directly out to the ocean and directly into HK without passing over Taiwan or Japan, it looks like you spend no more than 10-15 minutes over land. I have a good friend who is a pilot and he says that the actual flight path you take is determined by the weather and different airlines going from the same place to the same destination, around the same time, will actually follow each other across the Pacific.
