Before Magellan coined it "Pacific Ocean" in 1520, what was this ocean referred to as? Did it appear on any maps, was it referenced in any folklore or stories, was there any name used to refer to this ocean at all?
Any information would be greatly appreciated. Yes, I was looking for mainly the European name for it because that's the viewpoint I was working from, and Western sea sounds about right. Were there any widely-adopted names among other cultures for it? If anyone has any tips on this it would be appreciated. |

There weren't that many global maps prior to 1520 - and in many cases, people who lived on the Pacific Ocean had little or no idea of how large it was or what other bodies of land shared it. They may have had local names for the part of it they were aware of, but there was no overall name for it.

There were thousands of people living beside this ocean for centuries before Magellan gave it the name that western printers & publishers adopted.
Euro-centric means looking at issues only from the European point of view. Your question is a great example of Eurocentric thinking. |
