The Pacific Northwest climate requires you to plant a "cool" season grass. It does get cold in the winter even on the coast with mild summer time temps. I don't know if you are in Oregon or Washington, but both states do best with a cool season grass. Cool season grasses are the fescues, perennial rye, bentgrass, and Kentucky bluegrass. Northwest farm stores such as Wilco have grass seed in bulk, if this store is close to you. What you will want to get is a mixed blend of seed. There is a certain percentage of 2 or 3 varieties of cool season grass all mixed in one blend. The advantages of this is that if one of the varieties is suddenly attacked by disease (some are more susceptible than others) you will always have the other varieties still going strong until you can control the problem. In other words, your lawn will never go bare from a turf problem. If you had just one variety, and disease or the such attacked it, your whole lawn would be infected and if not controlled, would cause you to have to replace the entire lawn. Its also mixed to suit the climate of each growing region. If you have a Walmart in your area, Pennington Seed is a good product (Walmart carries their seed as well as Lowes). Their seed is formulated for each growing zone in the country and they have different blends. They also claim that their mix is 99.9% weed seed free. Iam providing you with a link to their product. A cool season mix will be your best bet. Hope this answers your question. Good luck!
