The Amtrak train system has passes that are good for a certain period of time. All trains are reserved so you can't just jump on and off but must do a little planning. You can get details here.

Info on passes is at this page.

stick with mass transport. like trains and buses and stuff. they are usually cheaper than renting a car.

Look at Amtrak.com, there you can put in your trip destination and find out about availability, and costs. Traveling by bus is still the least expensive way to go. But a trip on the train is by far the most enjoyable, and yes they do stop in small towns. check out a schedule.

I would not recommend train. The US train system is not very reliable or efficent like it is in other countries. Our train system is Amtrak and it is constantly in risk of going out of business because not alot of Americans travel by train these days. Plus, train travel is expensive here.

Your best bet is to go by public bus or private charter bus. Public buses stop in small towns and are a cheap form of cross country travel. The only thing about public buses is that they take forever to get to their final destination because they make so many stops in each town and alot of interesting characters ride the public buses.

I would look for private tour company that offer cross country bus travel. That is probably the safest and most affordable way to see the US. Here are a few websites:

Good luck and enjoy your trip!

It depends on where in the states you are going. From NYC to MA, it's probably cheaper to rent a care and drive (Boston is 4 hours from NYC) than take Amtrak or a bus. MA has the subway/commuter rail (mbta.com) and it's relatively easy to get around Boston that way and the commuter rail does reach some cities and smaller towns in Eastern MA. For the summer though, especially along the MA coast, the best option would probably be to drive - from Cape Ann to Cape Cod, there's a lot to check out but I don't think mass transportation would be the way to go. It depends on where you're going and what you're looking to do though...
