I've always lived in small countries, apart from Australia.
France or Spain seem to be huge to me. So many towns/cities, so many people, so much to do. To think America's like 15 times bigger than france......I mean it's really ginormeous. I kinda understand why few travel overseas....... I've heard that in average, americans don't travel overseas that much.....no offense.... |

It is rather big, but we also have a lot of the other countries rejects coming to live here.
But than a few of us like to, or would like to, go to the mother lands, or check out a few spots that they've only heard about. And there is just so much to choose from outside the U.S. |

I recently spent time in a small pacific island and it really opened my eyes as to just how big and empty the US really is! (I live in the spacious mid-west of the US).
Yes, the US has an amazing assortment of enviorments, desserts, sub tropics, winter wonderlands, woodlands, swamps etc. We also have a huge variety of cultures, China town to Creole, to German town in Wisconsin etc. Thank you for recongnizing that the US is a big and very diverse nation. It's very difficult to make accurate generalizations about our population because we are so geographically separated. We are sometimes reluctant to travel overseas because we perceive that no one likes us there. That is why I went to the south pacific instead of Europe. I just don't want to be hammered about George Bush (whom I never voted for). thanks. |

I understand where your coming from, but it does seem that Americans are rather uninformed about other countries in the world. The sheer size of America would be very hard for any American to find the time to visit and explore any other country whilst there is so much to see in their own country, so we must be fair! But the old saying still holds true today "Travel broadens the mind" I know a few Aussies that have the same problem! Have a great day!

Yeah, it's so big and lots to see...from oceans, rivers, mountains, canyons, etc. But sadly, everywhere you go is almost the same (culturally). I lived in California, New Orleans, DC, New York, Atlanta, and a few smaller places in between, but travelled throughout the country as well. Saw a lot, but not too stimulated by it all.
As for your question, yes, it is so huge in comparision to other smaller countries and we often have trouble seeing much of our own country and don't travel outside. Also, Americans are often ego and ethno-centric and see no need to travel unless it gains them $ or gives them something to brag about..."I've been to Europe"!!!!! So...I'm going on and on, but I left the US 3 yrs ago and now live in SE Asia. Love it here and plan to travel more...will eventually go back to US, if for no ther reason, so my kids can see grandparents and go to university! |

a lot of people think we stay here because we don't want to see other cultures but that's not true, a lot of Americans love to travel, we just cant afford to go to other country's, most of us live from paycheck to paycheck, we love to travel, some are afraid to go to other country's.
